Abstract
Research Area: Languages and Literature
KeyWord: Guy du Maurier, "An Englishman's Home," Invasion Literature, patriotism, resilience, invasion, Nearland
Abstract: Guy du Maurier's play "An Englishman's Home" stands as a poignant exploration of patriotism and resilience amidst the backdrop of a foreign invasion on England, symbolized by the threat of Nearland forces. The narrative centres on the plight of the Browns, an ordinary middle-class family, as they navigate the chaos and uncertainty of war. Throughout the play, themes of loyalty to country and family, as well as the unwavering determination to resist foreign aggression, are prominently displayed. Central to the narrative is the character of Mr. Brown, whose decision to defend his home against the invaders serves as a powerful symbol of patriotism and self-sacrifice. Likewise, the resilience displayed by the Browns in the face of adversity underscores the indomitable spirit of the English people, who refuse to surrender in the face of external threats. A significant aspect of "An Englishman's Home" is the revised ending by J.M. Barrie and Gerald du Maurier, which offers a last-minute British victory against the Nearlander forces. This alteration not only provides a sense of hope and optimism but also serves as a powerful symbol of the resilience and fortitude of the English nation. By changing the outcome of the play, Barrie and du Maurier offer a narrative of triumph in the face of adversity, reaffirming the enduring strength of the British spirit. Through meticulous analysis of the characters, plot, and historical context, this research article aims to shed light on the enduring significance of "An Englishman's Home" in the literary canon. By exploring the themes of patriotism and resilience as portrayed in the play, coupled with the revised ending, this research seeks to offer profound insights into the complexities of human nature and the enduring spirit of the English people in times of crisis.
